Foreign direct investment to reach 6 billion euro

During this year the foreign direct investments in Bulgaria will reach six billion euro. According to preliminary data, submitted by the Bulgarian National Bank, in 2007, the foreign investments were 5.7 billion euro, or 19.9 percent of gross domestic product (GDP).

Along this indicator, Bulgaria ranks first in Europe. Around 30 percent in the growth of the foreign direct investments in 2007, compared to the previous year. The Bulgarian entrepreneurs and companies in their turn invested approximately eight billion euro last year.

In the last two years Bulgaria attracted more foreign investments than for the whole period from 1990 to 2005. The main reasons for this are the Bulgaria EU membership and the policy of stabilization of the economy, undertaken after 1997. But during the next couple of years the rate of growth of the direct foreign investments would slow down.

The largest percentage of the foreign investments in 2007 came from Great Britain - 16.9 percent. Holland comes second with 9.5 percent. Austria is third with 8.4 percent, followed by Belgium with 7.8 percent, and the fifth place is taken by Greece with 7.2 percent. Looking into different sectors, the largest percentage of the investments was made in transactions with real estate with 37.8 percent, followed by construction with 30.6 percent, and the processing industry with 12.4 percent.
